Northumbria UniversityNorthumbria University (northeast of Newcastle city centre) is a large city university dating back to the late 1960s, when it was a polytechnic. Northumbria University received its official university status in 1992 and is today recognised throughout the UK and Europe for its high quality teaching and established links within the business community. There are 23,500 full-time and part-time undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Northumbria Newcastle, 16,000 of whom are full-time and many more on short courses. Applied Sciences Northumbria University is one of the UKs leading institutions for sport, offering high levels of teaching and sports recreation. Training and education programmes are also very popular. In addition, a large portion of graduates at Northumbria University go on to secure good jobs or continue in higher education within six months of graduation.
Northumbria University Campus LifeThere are two separate campuses at Northumbria University, including the main City Campus, in Newcastle city centre, and the Coach Lane Campus, just outside the city centre.City Campus: is located near the Civic Centre and Newcastle-upon-Tyne and houses the bulk of the facilities at the university, including the main library, the teaching accommodation and the Students' Union. Coach Lane Campus: is a few minutes from the city centre in a quiet suburb of the city and comes complete with teaching, seminar rooms and the Learning Resources Centre, which houses the library and university computers. Well-priced student accommodation is in quality halls of residence, as well as in nearby self-catered flats and townhouses. The Northumbria University Students' Union has a building in both campuses and provides every student with automatic membership. Facilities at the City Campus of the union include bars, eateries, lounges, a bookshop, a travel agent and the Jobshop. There is also a bar at the Coach Lane Campus Students Union, where The Session nightclub features every Thursday night.
Newcastle cityNewcastle offers one of the most vibrant nights out in the UK and also comes with rich history and great shopping. The city still boasts part of its ancient Roman walls, while Victorian architecture is everywhere. The undoubted star attraction of Newcastle is of course the unending supply of trendy cafes, modern bars, traditional pubs, and mega nightclubs.
Student LoansNorthumbria University is allowed to charge new, full-time students up to £3,000 a year for tuition fees from September 2006. Many students will apply for a student loan to cover their tuition fees and day to day living costs. Student loans are the best option for borrowing money for college as interest rates are traditionally low and repayments don't start until graduated students are in work and are earning over £15,000.
